March 2012: World Pasty Championships at Eden
The legendary Cornish pasties produced by Padstow's Chough Bakery are not just amongst the very best in Britain. Now they are officially 'world class'!
That was the message from the first-ever World Pasty Championship held last Saturday at the Eden Project, attracting over 100 entrants from as far away as the USA and Australia.
The event was open to individuals rather than companies. So two of Chough's master craftsmen entered the toughest professional categories – and both walked away with one of the top prizes against the world's best competition.
Ryan Smedley's classic traditional pasty was awarded second prize in the blue riband event, the Cornish Pasty Professional, while Chough's Luisa Ead sailed through to take second in the hotly-contested Open Savoury Professional category.
Delighted boss Rob Ead says: "The Chough Bakery is no stranger to the prize winner's rostrum. In previous years we have picked up the coveted Golden Pasty Award and, at the last South West Master Bakers Championships, we took first prize in not one but two pasty classes! But for our people to win at the first World Pasty Championship was something extra special.
"What's important to remember is that Luisa and Ryan are both part of the team who hand-make Chough's pasties each and every day. Those prize-winning pasties they created are just like the ones you can buy from our shop in Padstow. Every one's a winner!"

28th November: Padstow Pasty Day a great success!
As an end to the TV filming we were asked to organise a "Celebration of the Cornish Pasty!" In conjunction with our fellow Pasty makers in the Cornish Pasty Association we organised the first-ever annual Cornish Pasty Celebration Festival, but we are hoping that it will be the first of many!
We had a children's entertainer, face- painting, speeches, a Pasty Crimping competition entered by all the major Pasty producers and won by Crantock Bakery. WE also had a Cornish Dance troupe, beers provided by Skinners Brewery, and as many free pasties and cakes that could be eaten! The highlight of the night was the finale, when Port Isaac's own Fisherman's Friends sang a few shanties to round off a very successful night!
November: Chough Bakery filmed for BBC2 TV series "Business in the Blood"
WE have just finished roughly 3 months filming with the BBC for a TV documentary called Business in the Blood!
Presented by Alex Polizzi, this documentary focusses on struggling family businesses and how they cope with how to handover the business and all of the problems associated with running a family business!
The filming has been an interesting experience to say the least! We hope they have captured some of our infectious enthusiasm and passion for our products as well as some inevitable family disagreements and arguements! Whatever happens we are sure it will make an interesting and entertaining TV programme and hope it does not put anyone off what we do!
